Why Photographers and Brands Keep Coming Back to Arch Photo Studio
By Robbie Ewing — Studio Owner and Working Photographer, Camberwell SE5
I’ve been running Arch Photo Studio for seven years — one of South London’s most established photography studio hire spaces, based in a Camberwell railway arch. In that time I’ve shot everything from eCommerce packshots and music videos to editorial portraits and brand campaigns — all in the same railway arch in Camberwell. I’ve also watched hundreds of other photographers, videographers, and brands use the space and seen first-hand what makes a studio session work and what makes it fall apart.
Here’s what a proper studio actually gives you — based on real experience, not a generic list.
1. photography studio hire makes The weatherIrrelevant
This sounds obvious but it’s worth saying clearly: British weather will ruin your shoot. Not might — will, eventually. Wind, rain, flat overcast light, harsh midday sun — all of these are problems you simply don’t have inside a fully blacked-out studio.
At Arch Photo Studio, the railway arch structure means no skylights, no windows, no ambient light bleed. From the moment you close the door, the outside world doesn’t exist. That’s not something every studio can genuinely offer — a lot of converted spaces still deal with light coming in from somewhere.

2. Complete Lighting Control — and the Kit to Use It
Full blackout is only half the equation. The other half is having enough lighting equipment to actually do something with it.The ceiling arch also works as an excellent bounce modifier!
At Arch that means 8 Godox flash heads, 11 continuous Spots / LED panels, and 20+ modifiers — softboxes, octaboxes, reflectors, grids, snoots, coloured gels — all included in the hire price. You’re not working around what you brought with you. You can try something, change it, try something else. That flexibility is what makes studio sessions productive rather than stressful.
If you’re not sure how to set something up, I’m usually around and happy to help. That’s included too.
3. Repeatability — Critical for eCommerce and Product Work
If you’re shooting a product range, a clothing line, or anything that needs consistent results across multiple shots or multiple sessions, outdoor or location shooting makes this genuinely difficult. Changing light, changing backgrounds, unpredictable conditions.
In the studio, once your lights are set you lock them in and shoot. Every image has the same quality of light. If you make a note of your settings and take a BTS shot of your setup, you can recreate it exactly three months later. For eCommerce clients especially, this repeatability is often the main reason they move their shoots indoors permanently.

4. Space to Actually Work
People consistently underestimate how much space a shoot needs. It’s not just the photographer and subject — it’s the lighting stands, the backdrop, the kit bags, somewhere for the client to sit, space for a makeup artist to work, hanging space for wardrobe.
Arch is a full railway arch — 4.75 metre ceiling height, enough floor space for everyone to be comfortable. Ground floor access, no steps, private yard. We’ve had shoots here with crews of 10+ people and it hasn’t felt cramped. We’ve also had solo photographers come in for a quick two-hour session and had the whole place to themselves.
There’s a changing area, kitchen, and toilet on site. Small things, but they matter when you’re running a full production day.

5. Backdrops, Props and Set Building
At Arch we have 20+ colouramas in different colours, painted canvas backdrops, a range of props — chairs, stools, mirrors, plants, small furniture — and a fabric rigging system for overhead diffusion or hanging elements. Which is why photography studio hire in South London works better than location shooting for this kind of work
Most clients use what’s here as a starting point and bring their own props for specific shoots. The combination usually means you can create a wide variety of looks in a single session without leaving the building. We’ve had shoots here that looked like five completely different locations by the time they were finished.
A green screen is also available if you need it — useful for music videos and content that requires composite backgrounds in post.

6. Tethered Shooting and Client Approval
One of the biggest advantages of studio shooting that people don’t fully appreciate until they’ve done it: seeing your images on a large screen as you shoot them.
At Arch, Standard and Premium tier bookings include an additional monitor for tethered shooting. You fire up Capture One, shoot straight into the computer, and both you and your client can see exactly what you’re getting in real time. Client approvals happen on set, not two weeks later in post. Mistakes get caught immediately. The whole process is tighter and less stressful.

7. Privacy and a Controlled Environment
Location shoots in London involve the public, permissions, security guards, and the general unpredictability of shooting in a shared space. People wander into shot, dogs bark, someone decides to park directly in your background.
The studio is private. You control who comes in. For portrait clients especially — actors, musicians, professionals having headshots done — the privacy makes a genuine difference to how relaxed people feel. A self-conscious subject in a public space rarely gives you their best. The same person in a private, comfortable studio usually does.
8. Stills and Video in the Same Session
The demand for both photography and video content from a single shoot has increased significantly in the last few years. Most brands and content creators now need both — stills for the website and socials, video for reels and campaigns.
At Arch the lighting kit covers both formats. The continuous LEDs work equally well for video as for stills. We’ve had shoots where photographers and videographers have worked simultaneously in the same space, delivering both outputs from a single session. It saves budget, saves time, and means everything has a consistent look and feel.
